Stronger Together: Family Therapy Tips for Supporting Teens
When 15-year-old Mia first arrived at Casa Pacifica, she was withdrawing from the world around her—and hurting herself in ways that deeply alarmed her family. She stopped hanging out with friends, spent hours obsessively on her phone, and became increasingly isolated, trapped in her own thoughts and depression.
Her parents tried to reach her through conversations, constant check-ins, and reassurance, but nothing seemed to break through. As Mia’s self-harming behaviors escalated, her parents felt overwhelmed and unsure how to help, leaving the entire family emotionally drained and disconnected.
“We hit a wall with Mia,” her mother, Katherine, explains. “I felt completely helpless—like no matter what we said or did, we couldn’t reach her or keep her safe. Watching your child struggle and not knowing how to stop the pain is terrifying. We were desperate for answers and afraid of what might happen if nothing changed.”
Mia began receiving support through Casa Pacifica’s Camino a Casa residential treatment program, where she worked with a multidisciplinary team to stabilize her daily routine, manage her depression, address self-harming behaviors, and begin processing her experiences. A turning point came when her family began family therapy—an integral and required part of treatment—giving Mia and her parents the tools and guidance they needed to rebuild trust, improve communication, and begin healing together.

Family therapy helps teens and parents strengthen communication and support long-term mental health recovery together.
Family Therapy in Action: Lessons from Mia’s Journey
As Mia began opening up in her residential program, her family sessions provided a space to practice new ways of connecting. Here are some strategies that helped them—and can help other families:
- Active Listening
Give your teen space to speak without judgment. Repeat or reflect back what you hear to validate feelings. - Structured Check-Ins
Short, daily conversations can reduce misunderstandings and maintain connection. Even 10 minutes counts. - Positive Reinforcement
Celebrate small wins, like completing homework or trying a social activity. Confidence builds gradually. - Emotion Labeling & Regulation
Help your teen identify triggers and practice coping skills. Modeling regulation as a parent is just as important. - Keep a Therapy Journal
Track progress, challenges, and patterns. Review these notes in sessions to reinforce strategies and celebrate improvements.
