Digital Connections and Teen Mental Health: A Guide for Parents

In an era where technology permeates every facet of life, the rise of AI-powered chatbots has introduced new dynamics in how young people engage with their emotions and seek support. While these digital companions offer convenience and accessibility, experts caution about their potential impact on mental well-being.

The Digital Dilemma

A 2025 Stanford University study emphasized the importance of understanding the limitations of AI in emotional support. The study highlighted that AI therapy chatbots can sometimes deliver stigmatizing or unhelpful responses, particularly around complex conditions. AI chatbots can also suffer from “crisis blindness,” missing high-acuity mental health symptoms. This gap can be particularly concerning for youth navigating complex emotions.

Digital tools are everywhere—but understanding and empathy come from people, not just AI.

“While AI chatbots can offer a semblance of support, they lack the nuanced understanding and empathy that human interactions provide,” explains Shannon Calder, Ph.D., Clinical Program Manager, Camino a Casa.  “It’s important for parents and guardians to recognize signs of emotional distress or their child’s over-reliance on digital platforms, maintain open communication and seek professional guidance when needed.”

Signs to Watch For

Parents and educators are encouraged to be vigilant for signs that AI interactions may be affecting a youth’s mental health. These signs include:

  • Increased withdrawal from real-life social interactions
  • Over-reliance on digital platforms for emotional support
  • Difficulty expressing emotions offline or struggling to express feelings without turning to a digital platform
  • Changes in mood or behavior following AI interactions

Maintaining an open dialogue about online experiences is crucial in identifying and addressing potential issues early. Practical steps parents and guardians can take include:

  • Monitoring Usage: Regularly check the platforms your teen is engaging with and understand their functionalities.
  • Fostering Digital Literacy: Talk openly with your teen about how AI works—including its limitations and potential biases—to help them think critically about the information and feedback they receive online.
  • Setting Boundaries: Establish clear guidelines on acceptable use and time limits for AI interactions.
  • Encouraging Human Connections: Promote activities that foster real-life social interactions and emotional connections.

A Balanced Approach

While AI chatbots can serve as supplementary tools, they should not replace human relationships. Encouraging balanced use and fostering open communication can help mitigate potential risks and support healthy emotional development.
