Gender Expansive Services
Supporting Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE)
Youth may come to us with a wide range of needs related to sexual orientation and gender identity expression (SOGIE), from typical developmental questions and exploration to transgender identity. Our staff are trained in affirmative therapy approaches that help youth feel safe, respected and supported. This includes making appropriate bedroom and bathroom accommodations based on how a youth defines their gender.
These needs are identified before admission and continually reassessed with input from the youth, their family, our interdisciplinary treatment team and the insurance provider. Youth with additional risk factors—such as a history of elopement, substance use, sexually reactive behavior or hopelessness—receive individualized treatment plans with added interventions to reduce risk and increase safety.
As family plays a vital role in a youth’s stability and well-being, we make every effort to maintain strong communication and connection. This may include phone calls, family therapy, visits, participation in FEAT activities, and invitations to special celebrations. Whenever possible, we also encourage youth to stay connected with their community of origin. In addition, we partner with community organizations that specialize in serving diverse populations to ensure comprehensive support.
